Its purpose: to build railroads from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean to preserve the Union. Joined in 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah by the famous golden spike with the Central Pacific Railroad built eastward from San Francisco, the combined railroads became known as the First Transcontinental Railroad.
