This painting captures two BNSF locomotive “brothers” standing side by side in a Los Angeles train yard, dwarfing one of the humans who operates them. On the left, BNSF 5204 GE C44-9W (“Dash-9”) was built in 2004, one of the most common locomotives in the US. On the right, BNSF 8155, an Evolution Series ES44C4. built between 2014 and 2015. BNSF owns 1,271 units in this line, designed by GE Transportation System to meet the US EPA’s Tier 2 locomotive emissions standards that took effect in 2005. They are equipped with either AC or DC traction motors, depending on the customer’s preference. They are all powered by the GE GEVO engine.
